Dr. Agatston is a nationally recognized cardiologist who decided to develop an eating plan that would improve the cholesterol and insulin levels of his patients with heart disease. "My medical orientation has always been in prevention," said Dr. Agatston. "The diet grew out of the frustration in seeing more and more patients becoming obese, having metabolic syndrome and diabetes and all the heart disease associated with those conditions."

Mercy's pioneering treatment of prostate cancer
With prostate cancer being one of the most common types of cancer among men in this country, experts at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre are introducing a pioneering program that uses cryoablation, or super cold gas, to destroy cancer cells while having a minimal impact on surrounding tissue and organs.
Introducing this important new technology is Dr. Gary Oshinsky, and Dr. Robert Edelman, members of the Urological Surgeons of Long Island. Dr. Oshinsky also serves as the director of urology at Mercy Medical Center.
Dr. Oshinsky explained, "The Cryoablation Program can be an enormously effective tool for those who have been treated for prostate cancer before or for those who have found it returned after traditional radiation therapy. It uses thin needles with super cold gas to freeze the prostate with the cryogenic gas freezing the malignant cells in a procedure that takes a little more than an hour."
The technology avoids damage to the nearby bladder and urethra by using a warming device during the procedure while eliminating radiation altogether and allowing for a much quicker recovery in patients than having seed implants or surgery.
Dr. Oshinsky earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and graduated cum laude with a MD from SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn. He pursued further training as a resident in surgery and in urology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where in his final year of residency he was chief resident in urology.
Dr. Edelman graduated cum laude from Brooklyn College. He earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical School in Syracuse, and served residencies in surgery and in urology at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in the Bronx. Dr. Edelman has published several papers on urological research. and has invented several significant medical products, including the Edelman Catheter.
Dr. Edelman reports that the success rate for this form of treatment is extraordinary with clinical reports suggesting an 80 to 85 percent success rate in treating primary prostate cancer.
