Winthrop names new chief of gynecology



Alan D. Garely, M.D., has been named chief of gynecology and director of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at Winthrop University Hospital. Dr. Garely brings more than ten years of extensive experience in pelvic reconstructive surgery with a focus on urogynecology, the treatment of women with pelvic floor disorders and incontinence. Prior to joining Winthrop, Dr. Garely was the associate director of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. Dr. Garely has also been an assistant professor of OB/GYN at New York University School of Medicine as well as a Pelvic Anatomy teaching assistant for first year medical students since 1998.Dr. Garely serves as a consultant for the United States attorney general and sits on the senior national advisory board for Pharmacia. He also is a member of the speakers bureau for Ortho McNeil and conducts active research for both companies.


Cancer support group for women



Cancer is a devastating disease that affects the spirit as well as the body, at times leaving one exhausted and unable to cope. However, research has shown that those who have access to support services deal better with the stress of illness. In an effort to help women who are battling cancer, Winthrop-University Hospital's Women's Health Services is offering a free cancer support group scheduled for six consecutive Tuesdays: Jan. 28, Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25, and March 4. Sessions will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Winthrop's Pediatric Conference Room, 259 First Street, Mineola. Groups are facilitated by a social worker. Sessions are free, but space is limited. Please call 1-888-53-WOMEN to reserve your place. The Cancer Support Group is a community health education program, coordinated by Women's Health Services, part of Winthrop's Institute for Family Care.


Women's wellness lecture



Urologist Shashi S. Shah, M.D., of Franklin Hospital Medical Center, will host a lecture, "Urinary Incontinence," on Monday, Jan. 27, at 10:30 a.m. in the hospital's Shankman Auditorium, located at 900 Franklin Ave., Valley Stream.Refreshments will be offered at 10 a.m. The lecture will begin at 10:30 a.m. For more information or to register, call 516-465-2500.


EMS workers invited to hospital



The next educational meeting and lecture for local EMS and rescue squad members sponsored by Franklin Hospital Medical Center's Emergency Department will be held at the hospital on Wednesday evening, February 19. Starting with dinner at 6 p.m., Franklin's Director of Department of Emergency Medicine, John Rohe, M.D., has announced that EMT Paul Kerns, operating officer for training and development at North Shore LIJ Center for EMS, will be the evening's featured speaker. The topic of his 7 p.m. presentation is called "Pediatric Trauma" and will be preceded by a brief update on smallpox vaccine. Area EMTs, ambulance personnel and volunteer members of local fire department rescue squads are encouraged to attend.
