South Nassau reminds residents to thank their physicians on Doctor Appreciation Day

This Friday, March 30, marks the 21st anniversary of National Doctor’s Day. South Nassau Communities Hospital’s board of directors, administration and staff ask the residents of the South Shore communities of Nassau County to celebrate the day by thanking their physicians for the compassionate, quality care they provide.

“This is a day set aside to honor the physicians who work tirelessly to meet the needs of the patients they serve,” said Joseph A. Quagliata, president and CEO of South Nassau. “I urge all residents to join us in recognizing their physicians for their commitment and dedicated service.”

“One of the strongest of all relationships is that of a physician and patient,” added Linda Efferen, MD, South Nassau’s chief medical officer. “There is no better way to honor physicians than to thank them for the compassionate, skilled care they provide.”

A resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day was adopted by the United States House of Representatives on March 30, 1958. It was not until 1991, however, that President George H.W. Bush proclaimed it a national day of celebration.

Doctor’s Day was observed for the first time on March 30, 1933, in Barrow County, Ga. on the 91st anniversary of the first administration of anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long in 1842.
