Three South Side High School graduates — Christopher Hughes, Ryan James Spadaford and Christian Camarillo — were among 10 from Rep. Carolyn McCarthy’s 4th Congressional District who received appointments to various U.S. military service academies, after a rigorous application and interview process that took into account additional factors such as academic performance and extra-curricular activities.

Christopher Hughes, who most recently attended the Military Academy Preparatory School, was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Recent South Side High School graduate Ryan James Spadaford is set to attend the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis and Christian Camarillo will head off to the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport , R.I.

“These smart young men and women, along with our current forces serving around the globe, are our next Greatest Generation — smart, patriotic, brave and selfless,” said McCarthy. “Their examples bring confidence that our nation is in good hands for the future.”
