Imagine twisting, turning, hip swinging, rocking and rolling — all without any effort on your part. And all to benefit your health and well being. Well, that’s what it’s like getting on the new state-of-the-art SpineForce.
Designed by European physicians and therapists, SpineForce is a three-dimensional rehabilitation exercise machine.
“It’s an advanced, multi-featured physical rehabilitation machine,” said Dr. Jeffrey Wechsler, who works out of ROK Health & Fitness in East Rockaway. “It’s the first one in a gym in the country.”
According to Wechsler, the machine provides strength training as well as passive-motion training. “It can be used for all kinds of sports, as well as rehab for surgery and stroke victims. It has different kind of protocols: rehab, sports, tennis, golf, settings for moving men, heavy lifters — what muscles you may use for that particular activity.” Wechsler said that he had a patient who could even lift his arms over is head. “We had him on the machine to stretch his shoulder muscles, and now he can work out like everyone else.”
His patient, Nancy Friedman, uses the machine after hip replacement surgery. “The machine is working on both joints because the other hip is taking on the work of the one that was damaged. It works without her moving … the machine is doing the work for her.”
For help stroke victims, Wechsler said, the machine helps to repair repetitive actions, teaching the brain to take over for the damaged part. It also improves balance and coordination.
Often overlooked in most workouts, spinal musculature is one of the body’s most important muscle groups. The high technical value of the SpineForce rehab is its capability to provide feedback on your body’s performance and how you are progressing.
“After three or four treatments it was truly miraculous,” Friedman said. “The pain would dissipate for a day or two and then as I used it more and more the intervals became greater. I swear by it and still use it at least one or two times a week.”
The function of the SpineForce rehab is its ability to create an instability challenging sensory and motor systems to react, causing an interaction between your muscular and neurological performance. Capable of existing as a virtual trainer, SpineForce can be used to do simple warm-up exercise or for intense muscle strengthening and conditioning.
