The Hempstead Town Board meet on Tuesday, June 7 at 7 p.m. at Nathan Bennett Pavilion, One Washington St, Hempstead.


Congregation Beth Israel, 141 Hilton Avenue in Hempstead, holds Friday night services on the third Friday of each month at 7:45 p.m. Services are followed by a program/speaker and Oneg Shabbat. Class Reunion.

West Hempstead JCC. The Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead, 711 Dogwood Avenue, holds daily Minyan services, Mondays through Thursdays at 6:40 a.m.and 8 p.m.; on Fridays at 6:40 a.m. and candle lighting; and on Sundays at 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m.


Scholarship dinner.


The Board of Trustees of the West Hempstead Community Scholarship Fund invites the public to celebrate its 36th anniversary and honor the 2005 scholarship recipients. The scholarship awards presentation is scheduled for Sunday, June 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nassau County Bar Association in Garden City. The dinner is open to the West Hempstead and Island Park communities - residents, students, clerics, teachers, administration, and the business sector. The Scholarship Fund provides $2,000 scholarships for West Hempstead High School students and Island Park students who attend West Hempstead High School.To reserve tickets, call Eileen Fennell at (516) 483-7627. Tickets are $40 and $30 for high school students.


Happy birthday.


The Malverne Historical and Preservation Society will celebrate its 9th birthday with a celebration on Sunday, June 12 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Joseph L. Landers Restoration House on Ocean Avenue and Church Street. The festivities will include the installation of officers, refreshments and a raffle. Admission is free.


Books for veterans.


The Friends of the Malverne Public Library are turning to church groups, civic and service associations and citizens to be a part of their annual Books for Veterans program. For nearly 35 years they have provided paperback books and magazine subscriptions to hospitalized veterans in nearby V.A. hospitals. Because the Friends' coordinate the program themselves, every dollar contributed is used for the actual purchase of books and magazine subscriptions. LWV dinner.


The Central Nassau League of Women Voters is holding its annual dinner on Thursday, June 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Pompei Restaurant, 401 Hempstead Ave. in West Hempstead. The speaker will be Judge Susan T. Kluener of the Nassau County District Court and President of the Nassau County Bar Association. Malverne Community Presbyterian Church's thrift shop is open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the church hall on Nottingham Road.

Visit Sag Harbor.


Spend Wednesday, June 15 at picturesque Sag Harbor, an historic whaling village on the south shore. Enjoy strolling through the quaint streets and lunch at Spinnaker's Restaurant. After lunch, you'll ferry over to Shelter Island for a one hour bus tour, then return to Sag Harbor for an hour of free time to shop until you drop or simply relax before heading home. Prescription drug coverage seminar.


A speaker from the Social Security Administration will present a seminar about the new changes affecting seniors' prescription drug coverage on Wednesday, June 22 at 7 p.m. The seminar will cover Medicare Part D and the Part D subsidy programs, eligibility, monthly premiums, deductibles, and co-payments. Space is limited, so registration required.


A day by the seaside.


Explore the tip of the South Fork. The bus leaves the library at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, July 18 for Montauk, where you'll lunch at the famous Gurney's. A guide will meet the group at 1 p.m. for a 90-minute bus tour of historic Montauk. The day concludes at Gosman's Dock. Browse through the quaint shops or indulge in sweets at the old-fashioned confectionary shoppe. A check for $60 is payable to the West Hempstead Public Library at registration, which is ongoing.

The library has instituted a Homebound Delivery Community


Outreach Program that provides door-to-door delivery of reading material to Lakeview Public Library cardholders whose physical or visual needs require them to stay home.

Popular children's book author Richard Scarry was born on June 5, 1919. Why not spend a morning celebrating his birthday? The library presents a special story hour and will serve snacks on Monday, June 6 at 11:30 a.m.


Defensive driving for seniors.


On Friday, June 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., AARP will sponsor defensive driving for seniors interested in saving money on auto insurance premiums, deducting points from driving records and learning about highway safety. This defensive driving course is $10 and open to drivers age 50 and over. After completing the course, you will save 10 percent on liability and collision insurance and remove as many as four points from your driving record.
