The Jewish Center of Island Park, located at 191 Long Beach Road, will hold a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on June 1. For questions regarding medical eligibility or questions about the drive, contact Rita Kelly at the New York Blood Center at 431-3590.
St. AndrewÕs thrift shop on 50 Anchor Avenue in Oceanside is open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There are four rooms filled with kitchenware, lamps, curtains, arts and crafts, books and gently used clothing.
Driving in the safe lane The Community Parent Center will bring its highly acclaimed "Driving in the Safe Lane" program to Oceanside High School on Wednesday, June 11 at 7 p.m. The program educates parents, new and prospective teen drivers about safety measures, New York State driving laws, and parental liabilities. Since the programÕs inception, it has grown in popularity for its comprehensive approach and impact on those who attend. The 90-minute lecture program will be held at Oceanside High School, located at 3160 Skillman Ave. in Oceanside. The event is open to the public. AuthorÕs talk Author Eva Etzioni-Halvey will discuss her new biblical novel, ÒThe Garden of Ruth,Ó on Wednesday, June 4 at 2 p.m. Her novel deftly interweaves history and fiction to create a compelling exploration of a prominent biblical figure. Etzioni-Halevy is professor emeritus of political sociology at Bar Ilan University in Tel Aviv. Jewish American Fiction, a lecture at the Friedberg JCC, will take place on Thursday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. Join Dr. Ezra Cappell, author of ÒAmerican Talmud: The Cultural Work of Jewish American FictionÓ (SUNY 2008), as he redefines the genre of Jewish American fiction and places it squarely within the larger context of American literature. He departs from the conventional approach of defining Jewish American authors solely in terms of their ethnic origins. Instead, Cappell contextualizes Jewish American fiction within the theological heritage of Jewish culture. Cappell will sign copies of his book after the presentation.
