Las Vegas trip


The Senior Club of Oceanside will be sponsoring a trip to Las Vegas on Feb. 25. For details about the trip, there will be a meeting held at the Knights of Columbus, 2985 Kenneth Place in Oceanside, at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 26. For more information, call Jennie Kiermeier at 526-596-1839.


Fall fair and dinner


The First Methodist Church, 2915 Davison Street in Oceanside, will host its fall fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 30. This fair will feature pumpkins, gourds, wreaths and crafts galore, handmade items, fresh Long Island vegetables, fall flowers, homemade pickles, baked goods, granny's attic and a barbecue lunch. The fair will concluded with a dinner at 5:30 p.m., featuring a choice of Italian pasta and sausage or turkey trimmings served buffet style for $15 a person. Roll the dice


The Long Island Board of Realtors South Shore Chapter invites you to Casino Night at Bridgeview Yacht Club in Island Park from 6 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 19. The fee is $45 per person, and includes an open bar, cocktail hour, buffet dinner, D.J., dancing, raffle prizes and Chinese auction. All raffle proceeds will be donated to The Coalition to Salute Americans Heroes. Sons do the honors


The Michael Valente Lodge of the Sons of Italy will be holding a scholarship/fundraising luncheon in October. The lodge will give a Humanitarian award to Oceanside resident James Reed, deputy Commissioner of the Nassau County Office of Consumer Affairs; a Leader of Tomorrow award to Reed's daughter, Danielle Reed; and a Man of the Year award to Leonard Remo, president of the Long Beach City Council. The awards ceremony will be held at the Knights of Columbus, 2985 Kenneth Place in Oceanside, from 1 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 22.


Dramatic confidence


Sandee Leonhard of Drama Kids of South Nassau brings to Oceanside a program that focuses on interactive speech, verbal exercises that build confidence and help children reach full potential. A take on Picasso's role


Art lecturer Mary Vahey explores the Whitney Museum of Art's exhibition, "Picasso and American Art," examining Pablo Picasso's role in the development of 20th century art. The lecture will be held at 2 p.m. on Sept 19.

Stretch your writing skills with Professor Barbara Novack, plus welcome special guest, publisher Sheryl Perry of Sheron Enterprises, Inc., and learn the steps it takes to get your manuscript published into a book, and about the many potential venues for publishing your work. This creative writing workshop will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept 20.


A taste of Italy


Chef Lucian Veneziano returns for another cooking demonstration, with a special menu filled with mouth-watering Italian cuisine just in time for Columbus Day. Registration is required for this demonstration at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 3.


'Time Traveler's Wife'


This novel by Audrey Niffenegger jumps back and forth through time to tell of the bittersweet love story shared between a young debutante and her librarian, a time-traveling husband. Randi Kreiss will lead this talk at 2 p.m. on Oct 10.


Troubadours do pop


Conducted by Director Antonina Nigrelli, this 25-piece orchestra composed of mandolins, mandolas, mandocellos, a mandobasso, guitars and vocalists will perform a repertoire of international and popular music. Tickets are required for the performance at 2 p.m. on Oct. 15.


The king and Hacker


Oceanside resident and Elvis' biggest fan, Gregg Hacker, presents the rise and fall of the "King" through video, stories and samples from his own vast collection of Elvis Presley memorabilia. The presentation is at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 17.


Discover your writer within


Professor Barbara Novack invites writers of all levels to stretch their creativity in this monthly creative writing workshop. It will be held at 7p.m. on Oct. 18.

Defensive about driving


Lower your automobile insurance with an AARP Defensive Driving class. Participants must be 50 years or older and attend BOTH sessions. There is a $10 registration fee that must be made by check or money order and payable to AARP at the time of registration. Registration open to Island Park residents. All others will placed on a waiting list and notified if there are spaces available. The classes are at 12 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 19 and Sept. 20.


Defensive about boating


This boating safety course given the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 16, covers boating safety, legal requirements, boat handling, aids to navigation, knots and "rules of the road." Upon completing this course, certificates will be awarded that may result in a discount on your boat insurance policy.
