Even though our high school, known in the good old days as St. Agnes Academic School in Rockville Centre, officially closed in 1987 and is now under the wing of Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale, our class of 1956, a group of 129 graduates, is still filled with enormous school spirit. Scattered far and wide, our classmates faithfully reunite at festive milestone reunions, and even off-years, as we did last month. Most of us spent 12 years together, having also attended St. Agnes Cathedral Elementary School.
When we planned our 50th Reunion in 2006, our committee updated our class list, and located all but one classmate. Since then we have kept everyone informed via the wonders of email, sharing our news, requests for prayers and the loss of 17 classmates.
On June 20, 50 of us celebrated our 56th reunion with a lovely luncheon at a waterside restaurant on Freeport’s nautical mile. Classmates came by train, plane, car and boat, traveling from Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New York to enjoy a fabulous afternoon together. The evident warm, fun-loving spirit of the close knit group brought back many memories and made us feel like we were 16 again – and that’s a pretty nice feeling.
Hearing 50 men and women say Grace together and thank God for all their blessings reminded us of all the memorable rituals that were a big part of our education at St. Agnes.
Everyone went home with an updated class list to keep us linked with new retirement addresses, phone numbers and emails. I can’t wait until next June when we’ll meet again! Until then, we have weekly emails.
