This year, the seventh grade students at St. Agnes Cathedral School are embracing the Common Core Standards with gusto. Included in one of the seventh grade modules, the students are reading a New York Times bestseller “A Long Walk to Water,” written by Newbery Honor winner Linda Sue Parks.

Set in Sudan, the novel focuses upon the difficult childhood of Salva, one of “the lost boys” who was ultimately airlifted to the United States in the 1990s. Salva’s experience is paralleled with a young girl named Nya and her hardship of providing water to her family. Their lives cross when Salva returns to Sudan.

Successful, Salva realizes that if he is truly going help the Sudanese people, he must continue to create new water wells which provide healthy and safe drinking water.

Encouraged by Salva and his organization called The Water Project, the seventh grade students have started a collection to help the people of Sudan. So far, they have collected $150.
