The cause of death is under police investigation and could not be confirmed as of Herald press time.
Barrow was a star football and lacrosse player at Baldwin High School, where he graduated in 2004, all the way to his college years at the University of Virginia, where he was an integral part of the men's lacrosse team's journey to the 2006 national championship. Friends of Barrow, a sociology major, described him as a kind and caring young man who could never be seen without a smile on his face.
"It's a complete shock," said Steve Carroll, Baldwin's head football coach. "Will was a super kid and a super athlete. He was a great receiver, defensive back and special teams player for us. He always had a smile on his face. He was well-liked and he'll be missed."
Baldwin boys' varsity lacrosse coach Rich Garguilo described Barrow as the greatest athlete he's ever coached. Barrow earned honorable mention All-America recognition for the Bruins as a senior, scoring 40 goals and leading them to the Nassau Class AA semifinals. "He picked up a lacrosse stick for the first time as a ninth grader, and four years after that he's playing at Virginia," Garguilo said. "He was the best athlete I ever coached. But as great an athlete as he was, he was a better person."
Barrow was selected by the Chicago Machine in the second round of the Major League Lacrosse Draft this past spring. Chosen No. 11 overall, he appeared in five games and scored three goals. While at Virginia he emerged as one of the top defensive midfielders in the country. He scored 18 goals and recorded seven assists during his collegiate career for the Cavaliers, who reached the Final Four in three of his four seasons.
"He was a good guy, a real happy go-lucky kid," said Michael Colley, assistant director of Media Relations at Virginia. "He was well-liked by all his teammates and coaches, and someone that all his teammates would look up to."
Barrow is survived by parents, Rita and George Barrow, and younger siblings, Trevor and Sabrina.
