This pooling of talent, includes young thespians from Baldwin, East Meadow, Elmont, Franklin Square, West Hempstead, Long Beach and Valley Stream, enabling the school to put on stellar productions like their recent undertaking, "Jesus Christ Superstar."
"Superstar," is a rock opera that attempts to put to rest any doubt regarding whether or not Jesus Christ was human. That He was also the son of God is not initially as clear in what was considered an innovative musical, by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice when it opened on Broadway in 1971.
It isn't easy seeing Jesus portrayed as impatient, restless, angry and, well, human. But on the other hand, believing that He was human may have made it easier for people to listen to his message, and to be unafraid to follow His teachings. And later after his death and resurrection believe that He was the son of God. yet, "Superstar" depicts Christ's struggle during His final days, the questions, and the doubts followed by his ability to totally embrace His crucifixion an event so remarkable that it led even his tormentors to say: "This was truly the son of God."
Daniel Moore's, portrayal of Christ was powerful. Appearing to be exhausted, restless and at times confused, Moore's interpretation of Christ clarified how in the final hours He could reject the sick, question his fate but simultaneously continue to feel an overwhelming compassion and love for mankind.
"Superstar" was written as a star vehicle for the actor playing Judas. Ryan Camenzuli, from Baldwin, couldn't have been better. An excellent dancer and multi-dimensional actor, he commanded the stage at all times. His portrayal of Judas was exciting, and had depth. Camenzuli is quite talented.
Mary DeBorger, as Mary Magdalene was earthy with a sweet voice. She was compelling and gentle; an actress with a future.
The company of actors were very impressive having much success with numbers that included, Hosanna, Simon Zealotes/Poor Jerusalem, and Trial by Pilate. This success was aided by excellent choreography by Catherine Murphy and Jacqueline Turk.
Standout performances included those by Anthony Russo, and Zak Allen of Long Beach as priests, East Meadow residents, Patrick Cavlin, as one of the Apostles, and Kevin Hunker, Michele Logan and Lauren Collins in the ensemble. Mike Blais, from West Hempstead as Caiaphas was notable as were ensemble member Katie Lomardo of Franklin Square, Catherine Del Castillo, playing one of the Apostle's wives, and Ally Farzetta in the ensemble from Valley Stream.
Director David Overton should be proud of his production. "Jesus Christ Superstar" was truly magical.
