Steiner named top doc at PHC

Dr. Steiner has been the Director of the Department of Surgery at Peninsula Hospital Center since 1997. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brooklyn College in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. He went on to graduate Cum Laude from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 1976. After completing both a residency and fellowship, Dr. Steiner became an attending surgeon at Mainmonides Medical Center and opened a private practice of General and Vascular Surgery in Brooklyn. Dr. Steiner serves as the Chairman of the Operating Room Committee, Vice Chairman of the Institutional Review Board and a member of the Credentials Committee at Peninsula Hospital Center. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery, and is a member of the American Medical Association, Kings County Medical Society, New York State Medical Society, New York Society for Cardiovascular Surgery, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Steiner has been named one of New York's Best Doctors by the Castle Connolly Guide in every edition published.

Carnation Ball Raises Funds for Cancer Services



More than 500 supporters of South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside were in attendance as the hospital celebrated its 2002 Carnation Ball recently, held at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage. The event raised almost $500,000 to benefit South Nassau's Cancer services, including its new satellite Valley Stream facility, and the Long Island Gamma Knife at the hospital's main campus. This year's honoree, Thomas Puusepp, President and CEO of Elekta Systems, Inc., was recognized for his dedication in establishing the Long Island Gamma Knife Center at South Nassau; the first such facility on Long Island. Harbhajan Singh, MD, and Eugene Thompson, MD, two dedicated physicians, received the Mary Pearson Award for their extraordinary efforts and spirit of selflessness, and for significantly advancing the hospital's mission of compassion and service. Dr. Singh has been a member of the South Nassau family for the past 25 years. He has held staff appointments as President of the Medical Staff, Co-Chief of Pulmonary Medicine, Director of the Respiratory Therapy Department, and Chairman of the Respiratory Therapy Committee, among others. Dr. Thompson has been a member of the South Nassau family for 24 years. He has served as Co-Chief of Nephrology since 1978, and is currently a member of South Nassau's Board of Directors. He has also served as a member of the Medical Board and as Co-Medical Director of the Outpatient Dialysis Center. Childbirth Prep Classes at Franklin



Franklin Hospital Medical Center in Valley Stream offers two special childbirth preparation classes on an on-going basis. The Childbirth Education Class will be helpful to every expectant mother and their significant other to prepare for delivery and care of their newborn. Topics covered in the Childbirth Education Class include Relaxation and Breathing Techniques, Stages of Labor and the Coach's Role, cesarean Sections and Postpartum Expectations and Care of the newborn. In addition, a personal tour of the hospital's modern Maternity Department is included. The Baby Care Class "What Do We Do Now?" is perfect for expectant parents, grandparents, and other care givers that need to know about the immediate care needs of the newborn infant. Call Franklin at (516) 256-6001 for class dates and to register. The Childbirth Preparation Class is offered in four evening sessions or two Saturday morning sessions. The fee is $100. The one hour Baby Care Class is offered on monthly Saturdays from 1:00-2:00 p.m. The $10 fee covers refreshments.


Hospital Thrift Shop Needs Volunteers



Franklin Hospital Medical Center's Thrift Shop located at 138 Rockaway Avenue in Valley Stream invites interested community members to volunteer at the store to maintain merchandise and handle sales. The shop, which offers furniture, children's apparel, designer clothing and house-hold items is open 6 days a week. Thrift Shop Manager Freda Rohsiepe indicates the Monday through Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Any individual willing to volunteer time are asked to please call Mrs. Rohsiepe at the Thrift Shop by calling 825-5216. All proceeds from the operation of the shop are earmarked to enhance patient services at the 325 bed medical complex.
