When East Rockaway and Lynbrook residents wanted to be near the water this weekend, this isn't what they meant.
According to the National Weather Service, about eight inches of rain fell at nearby John F. Kennedy Airport on Sunday. A flood warning remains in effect through Monday evening with another 1 to 1.5 inches of rain possible.
As of 10 a.m. Monday morning, the Long Beach branch of the Long Island Rail Road was running on time, but the Babylon branch had delays.
Regarding the photo accompanying this story:
"This is Wood Street and Crab Avenue in Lynbrook,"said Stephen Wangel, owner of Kitchen Loft, who took the photo. "This is a chronic problem during heavy rains. As far as I understand, this area was a lake about 80 years ago, and never properly filled in before house construction began. All of the basements on this block are high out of the ground, as the water table is high. Despite the best efforts of the village, the catch basins fill easily and back up on to the streets, as this is the lowest geographic area of Lynbrook and rain water from all over collects here. The truck that is stuck belongs to Long Island Water. How Ironic!"
