Charles Casolaro has been appointed attorney for the Village Planning Board. Though the two newest board members, Farnan Mulry and Karamouzis, declined to vote for Casolaro, the majority voted for him. Casolaro said he is looking forward to serving the community and working with both the mayor and the board.
The board acknowledged expenditures of approximately $3 million this summer to repave streets, some of which are between 35 and 40 years old, and repairing and expanding water main pipes from 4 to 6 inches. Additionally, some of the money is being put toward the removal of abandoned pipes and the rebuilding of curbs, curb cuts and ramps for the disabled. Board members extended their thanks to patient residents while the village works to enhance the beauty of Rockville Centre's neighborhoods.
The surprise power failure last May that caused a well failure in a tank at Maple Avenue was repaired. The existing well pump was removed and the well casing was realigned and grouted. The village reports that generators were up quickly, keeping faucets running. With the well tank out of service, it was critical to move fast in order to avoid interruption in water service. A payment of $95,153 was made to the Layne Christensen Company for the emergency repair, which took two weeks to complete.
Also noted at this month's meeting was the professional services contract with Dvirka & Bartilucci for the Phase II Storm Water Program in the amount of $17,500. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says villages must have a program in place for a water construction site and water runoff control regulations. Dvirka & Bartilucci will provide professional services to assist the village's engineering department with the completion of their program on storm water regulations.
Last but not least, Mayor Eugene J. Murray celebrated his 80th birthday this month.
