Winthrop-University Hospital, in an effort to identify those at risk and create awareness, will hold a free Stroke Risk Assessment on at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 23. The program will begin with registration and assessments followed by the lecture at 5 p.m. at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Blvd., Mineola. Parking is available in the rear of the building.

Dealing with dizziness

Healthy parenting 101



Healthy parenting will be discussed by Bridget Irslinger, CSW, during a lecture at Franklin Hospital Medical Center, 900 Franklin Ave., Valley Stream, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 6. Irslinger teaches insights in parenting and is a representative from Nassau County's Family and Children's Association. Driver safety program



AARP's 55 Alive Drivers Safety Program will be held at Franklin Hospital Medical Center, 900 Franklin Ave., Valley Stream.The course, for individuals 50 years of age or older, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4 in the hospital's Shankman Auditorium. 'Stroke Alert' screening



Stroke Alert!, a free stroke screening program sponsored by the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, will take place at locations throughout Long Island beginning Friday, May 17 through Friday May 24. A free Stroke Alert! risk assessment can help a person identify any stroke risk factors, as well as learn the warning signs and preventative steps needed to minimize a person's risk of stroke. Winthrop opens neurological intensive care units



A new, state-of-the-art 14-bed neurological intensive care unit was officially opened at Winthrop-University Hospital's Institute for Neurosciences, offering advanced and comprehensive techniques for monitoring the activity of the brain in patients who require intensive neurological care. "This state-of-the-art unit is the first one devoted solely to the neuroscience patient," said Alan Rosenthal, chief of Winthrop's division of neurosurgery. "This will allow our doctors and nurses to focus on prioritizing the nervous system, allowing full resources of the hospital to the patient in a coordinated fashion."The technology includes the addition of the Doppler system, which monitors the blood flow through the vessels of the brain. The unit is also equipped with EEG monitors as well as intercranical pressure monitoring devices. Winthrop sleep center



The Sleep Disorders Center at Winthrop-University Hospital has recently been reaccredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). To receive AASM accreditation, a center must meet or exceed all standards for professional, quality healthcare as designated by the Academy."We are honored to have once again received reaccreditation," said Michael Weinstein, M.D., Director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Winthrop, and Diplomat of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. "Our dedicated and experienced team of physicians and technicians look forward to continuing to serve our community in the years to come."Established in 1986, the Sleep Disorders Center at Winthrop-University Hospital is a referral facility for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sleep problems. The Center provides comprehensive, individual evaluation and state-of-the-art testing for the diagnosis and treatment of clinical disorders related to sleep.The AASM accreditation process involves detailed inspections of the center's facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts and physician training. In addition, the goals of the facility must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.
