Student crowned champion of Atl. Beach tennis tournament

Competition began on Monday, August 6th and completed with the finals on Sunday, August 12 at the Atlantic Beach Tennis Center.
In a surprise, the young unseeded Pierre Clavel of Lynbrook, a sophomore at SUNY-Binghamton upset local favorite Gregg Schwartz of Woodmere in the quarterfinal round in straight sets (6-3, 6-0). Schwartz, who was seeded second in the tournament, is a high ranking Eastern player and works full-time on Wall Street. Tournament officials expected Schwartz to make it to the finals.
Clavel, who was making his first appearance in the tournament, went on win the individual championship of the Atlantic Beach Men's Open Challenger after trouncing Alex Johns of Great Neck, (6-0, 6-0) in just 45 minutes.
"It was fun to play and to win the tournament," said Clavel, originally from France. Clavel calls the club "home" because he teaches and works at its summer camp and is used to playing on the courts.
The tournament attracted a draw of 16 players from Long Island, New York City and Westchester. It was sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association.
