What student would voluntarily choose to return to school in the evening to do math? More than 140 students at the Hewitt Elementary School did just that on a rainy night in late January when AIS teacher Abbe Kellner organized Hewitt’s second annual Family Math Night.
Throughout the evening, children in grades K - 5 experienced math standards in action as they participated in hands-on, interactive math games and activities. Highlights included play with measurement, operations, place value, fractions, money and geometry. Students enjoyed exploring mathematical ideas with dice, bubbles, rice, blocks, beanbags, straws, frogs and shoes. That night, Hewitt’s Hurricanes discovered first hand that learning can be lots of fun!
