About 15 fourth-and fifth-grade members of Waverly Park Elementary School's student council made 30 baskets filled with toiletries, books and other helpful items and donated them to the seniors in need.
"I thought it was a wonderful learning experience for them knowing they can help members of the community and to realize that there are much less fortunate people that are in need of things we take for granted," said Shari Glickman, a Waverly teacher and student council co-adviser.
Glickman said the student council at the East Rockaway school has placed more of an emphasis on community service and will continue participating in similar outreach efforts.
PCC's "Just for You" campaign was created as an outreach effort for Valentine's Day. Audrey Goodman, a coordinator for PCC's volunteers and special events, enlisted the help of volunteers from the PCC's auxiliary and junior auxiliary groups.
According to Goodman, a large number of people from the Five Towns, Lynbrook and surrounding areas have pitched in to help.
"We have been so fortunate and overwhelmed with so many items that this will go past Valentine's Day," Goodman said.
As per government regulations, the identities of the senior citizens are protected. But through their therapists, Goodman said she has received positive feedback.
There is no deadline on the "Just for You" program. Community members can still help by donating items that aren't provided by food stamps, such as toothbrushes, magazines, shaving cream and scarves.
