The districts were among 40 that received shade trees as part of the Greening of Nassau program, a project that had Long Island students plant 43 trees during the week of April 20-24 while learning about the environment.
Levy-Lakeside School was chosen as the home for the Merrick School District's tree planting. First-grade students gathered around Principal Miriam Hanan on April 22 as she held a shovel on a rainy Earth Day.
Camp Avenue students celebrated Arbor Day on April 24 with their new shade tree, reading stories and singing songs that taught them about nature.
The project was co-sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassu, in cooperation with County Legislator Dave Denenberg and the County Department of Public Works Commissioner Robert Ribiero and in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Southwest Nassau, Plant Health Care, Inc., the Sierra Club, the U.S. Forest Service, New York ReLear-DEC, and the Nassau BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education Program.
