Suozzi gains support for co. exec. race

One of the two Democrats seeking their party's nomination in the Nassau County Executive race received endorsements from several South Shore elected officials last week.
County Legislators Jeff Toback, Roger Corbin and David Denenberg were among 16 Democrats who declared their support for Thomas R. Suozzi at a Mineola rally on Monday, Jan. 29, two weeks after the four-term Glen Cove mayor formally announced his candidacy for the nomination.
"I am supporting Tom Suozzi because I believe he is the Democrat that can defeat the GOP machine," Toback told the Herald this week. "He has a proven record in Glen Cove, has turned that city around. I know if given the chance he is the person who can lead Nassau County out of its fiscal freefall and back onto a strong financial footing."
Suozzi, 38, will face fellow Democrat Assemblyman Thomas DiNapoli in a September primary to determine who will battle the Republican or any independent nominee in November.
For the time being, Democrats have an empty field on which to battle among themselves while Republican incumbent Thomas S. Gulotta has yet to declare his interest in reelection, and Republican Party officials have named no other candidate.
