Super Bowl Sunday
A bonanza for many entrepreneurs
Super Bowl Sunday is a special event not only for New York football Giants fans but also for numerous entrepreneurs in Oceanside and neighboring communities. A survey by the Herald showed that many operators of restaurants, catering companies, liquor stores, taverns, sporting goods shops and other ventures are already enjoying a pickup in business with more to come in a significant way as the big January 28th event for Big Blue draws closer. None could be happier than Steve Sciortino, owner of Delicious Moments Caterers, 2750 Oceanside Road, Oceanside.
We've already received 50 orders and they are still coming in, says Sciortino, Without a doubt, business is much, much better because it's the New York Giants. Our largest order so far is for a party of 125 people at a hall in Great Neck. We do these things up in a special way. We provide a stadium-like atmosphere. We lay out a section of Astroturf. Put benches in, the same way it would be in the stadium. We provide Gatorade and gatorade cups on the sidelines with a football scheme tablecloth. It's like the partygoers are sitting in the bleachers right in the stadium.
Here's how Richard Edgar, owner of Thrifty Beverage in Oceanside puts it: For my place, it means quadruple or more times the business I do on any other Sunday. I put on three extra people just to help carry our products out to customers' cars. We have customers over a wide area in and around Oceanside. For example, there used to be a Thrifty Beverage in Baldwin, but that went out of business about 2 1/2 years ago so we get a lot of customers from Baldwin...individuals and businesses.... As well as other communities.
Edgar was girding for a big, final push as Super Bowl weekend approaches. Our business will be up sharply from Friday through Sunday of that weekend, he said. There will be a lot of parties forming then, and they will involve women as well as men. The Super Bowl party is no longer a men-only event. Lots of wives will be joining in with their husbands to host the parties, and there will be larger groups in the private get-togethers. Years ago, these parties were held in bars, but now they have shifted to homes and apartments. This year's game will be even larger than usual because the New York Giants are involved. The game will have a far greater audience for that reason in these parts. I am convinced that Super Bowl Sunday is the best holiday for retailers of beer than any other holiday of the year.
Baldwin restaurateur Derek Houdek is another business man who can tell when the big game is coming. Houdek, owner of Houdek's Restaurant & Tap Room, 845 Merrick Road, has already installed a 53-inch TV at his bar to go along with five other television sets that will be carrying the Super Bowl. Usually, he has four TVs operating in his place, but for this event he will have six to handle the increased business, Houdek said. My dining room is booked solid for that day. My customers have come to know that I put out a complimentary buffet during the half-time period of the game
