Supermarket plans revealed

"As far as we're concerned, they can start construction today," said Merrick Park President Barry Fox, who has been involved in negotiating architectural plans for the planned supermarket since 2006. Before construction can begin, though, the town's Building Department must approve the expansion.
Fox received diagrams of the proposed building last weekend. The new plans include changes from an agreement approved in March 2008, including removal of a basement in exchange for a second-floor storage level.
"Please know that the Merrick Park Home Owners Association would never agree to anything that is not in the best interest of Merrick Woods residents," Fox said, adding that he negotiated with Stop & Shop to close the store by 11 p.m. The supermarket also agreed not to post signs facing Hewlett Avenue so as not to disturb Merrick Woods residents.
Fox is still concerned about increased traffic and truck deliveries, as well as a parking deficit of more than 400 spots. But he said, "The agreement, I think, is the best we could have gotten given the economy."
The new Stop & Shop will have a first floor of more than 41,100 square feet, with a Citizens Bank and a Starbucks.
