Two hours later, Fourth Precinct police officers Stephen Firestone and James Lorenzen arrested the suspect, Jermaine Pitter, 21, of Lawrence Avenue in Inwood, authorities said.
The stabbing took place at Mott and West End avenues at about 9 p.m. on Monday, when Pitter allegedly pulled out a knife and plunged it twice into the victim's buttocks. The suspect then ran away, according to Fourth Squad Detective Christopher Randazzo.
Detective Lt. Gregory Detwiller of the Fourth Squad said the suspect approached the victim to continue an altercation that they had begun last Saturday. "I don't know what the fight was about," said Detwiller. "They are not telling us. All we know is that one approached the other and wanted to continue the altercation from Aug. 20.
"The suspect had a knife in his hand, and stabbed [the victim] in the buttocks," Detwiller said.
The victim, whose name and address were withheld by police, was taken by police ambulance to St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway, where he was treated for puncture wounds to his buttocks and then released.
Officers fanned out through the neighborhood, canvassing local streets until they spotted the suspect at about 11 p.m. on West End Avenue and Norton Street, officials said.
"The suspect was known to the victim," said Detwiller.
"The victim named him, and the officers who worked the area knew who he was," he said.
Detwiller added that the suspect has an arrest record and previously was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
The knife was not recovered, police said.
Pitter was charged with second-degree assault, and he was arraigned on the charge in First District Court in Hempstead on Tuesday, according to police.
