Long Beach’s Jacori Teemer capped off a dominating sophomore season with third straight wrestling title at the New York State Championships in Albany last weekend.
Teemer captured earned the three-peat with a dominating performance on the mats at the Time Union Center in the 126 pound-weight class. Teemer won his first two matches 3-0 and 11-6 before defeating the defending 120-pound state champion Alex Vargas of Syosset, 8-5, in the semifinals. He then clinched the title with a 6-3 win against defending 112-pound champion John Arceri of Huntington by a 6-3 score to cap off an undefeated 49-0 season.
“He was never in danger in any of the matches,” said 20-year Long Beach head coach Ray Adams of Teemer’s march to the title. “He wrestled very well.”
Teemer became just the second Long Beach wrestler to win three straight state titles and first since Al Palacio from 1980 to 1982. He brought home the 113-pound crown as an eighth grader and 120-pound championship last year. Adams said a rigorous schedule that featured elite tournaments like the Union Endicott Duals and the Eastern States.
“He has wrestled the toughest kids in the state,” Adams said. “We had one of the toughest schedules.”
Matt Maquet and Tyreke Bromley also returned to Long Island with successful showings upstate earning All-State accolades. Maquet came in sixth place at 120 pounds while Bromley placed fifth at 182 two weeks after winning a county title at Hofstra.
Long Beach sent three additional wrestlers to the states that shined on the big stage. Shawn Bourne (120 pounds), Charlie Spada (145) and Tyrese Byron (152) all recorded two pins before falling in matches to place.
The success at the state championships capped off a magical 2015-16 season that saw the Marines go undefeated and repeat as Nassau County dual meet champions. The Marines then set a record at the Nassau County Division I individual championships with 322.5 points and 14 All-County finishers. Long Beach finished atop the final New York State Sportswriters Association rankings released on Feb. 25 and was honored at the Times Union Center for being the top dual meet team in the state after winning the Union Endicott Duals.
“The kids worked real hard,” said Adams, who will return 13 All-County wrestlers next winter. “It was a great team effort.”
