The festival is based on an ancient story against oppression involving a king, his evil adviser Haman and a woman by the name of Esther. Esther helps the king stand up to his evil adviser, banishing him forever. The holiday is celebrated on the 14th night of the Jewish month of Adar in the Hebrew Calendar, which usually falls in March.
