Tenants evacuated from Shore Road co-op

City officials say building's structural problems pose safety risk

Long Beach City Manager Charles Theofan announced on Nov. 19 that a cooperative building at 250 Shore Road would be vacated immediately after the city received a letter from an engineering firm stating that structural problems could cause the building to collapse.

According to the letter, from an engineering firm retained by the cooperative and dated Nov. 18, the firm discovered structural problems that could cause either a partial or complete collapse of the building.

Long Beach Building Commissioner Scott Kemins issued an order condemning the structure, and ordered it to be vacated until necessary repairs are completed.

“The city will work closely with the cooperative and engineer to expedite the processing of building permits for repairs,” Theofan said, “and we will carefully oversee the work so as to minimize the disruption to the co-op owners.”

The condemnation order will be lifted once temporary shoring is in place.

Theofan added that arrangements would be made to allow owners to remove personal items during this “unfortunate forced relocation.”

The building, built approximately 50 years ago, has 40 units.
