The Seahawks are serious about making another playoff run so rather than starting this season with consecutive losses, theyre 3-0 after knocking off New Hyde Park, Garden City and Levittown Division.
The 20-7 victory over perennial power Garden City at Carey marked the first time in school history the Seahawks beat the Trojans on their home field. After spotting Garden City a 7-0 halftime lead, the Seahawks ran off 20 consecutive points. Senior quarterback Luke Zahradkas 33-yard touchdown pass to junior Joe Gregorio put them ahead to stay late in the final quarter. Senior middle linebacker Jason Alvino thwarted Garden Citys last chance when he picked off a screen pass and rumbled 58 yards for the final tally. Junior Greg DArienzo ran for 180 yards on 20 carries, and threw a touchdown pass. On defense, senior safety Sal Cerami (10) and senior linebacker Chris Humrich combined for 20 tackles as the Seahawks held Garden City scoreless over the final 24 minutes.
Carey head coach Mike Stanley is impressed with his defense. The entire defensive unit has been pretty solid, Stanley said. The linebackers have been all over the field. Alvino has been very impressive in the middle for us.
In the season opener against New Hyde Park, the offensive line composed of juniors Al Gentile and Pat Castel, and seniors Joe Nichols, Joe Fasano and Anthony Romanello blasted open holes to enable Humrich to pick up 114 yards on the ground and two touchdowns in a 39-14 victory. Alvino had a touchdown and recorded eight tackles. Senior Rob Braun caught a touchdown pass from Zahradka to cap off the scoring. Zahradka was 7-for-12 and threw three touchdown passes in his first game as a varsity starter.
Last week at Division, Zahradka hooked up with Braun for a 72-yard score to put Carey on the board midway through the opening quarter, and Humrich went 80 yards for a score to lead the Seahawks to a 26-6 victory. Nichols had eight tackles and a couple of sacks. Fasano added three sacks.
Stanley is pleased with the early results, but knows there are tough games ahead. Weve been good on both sides of the ball, Stanley said. We have a big challenge this week. Calhoun is big and aggressive. I expect a real physical battle.
Carey hosts the undefeated Colts this Saturday at 3 p.m.
