You might say this is Christmas spirit coming through. Though I wouldn't necessarily rule it out, there is something special about Christmas. It's the one day, even after all the holiday cards are read and the presents are opened, when things just somehow seem to come together.
As much as I fear being miserable on this holiday, as much as I think things can't be worse, there are always those people who come through and make it memorable. This year is sort of weird for me. Being away from home and not as close to my family as I have been in years past, I can't help but feel the void.
I've leaned on my friends a bit more than usual this year. It's been tough, because I'm still feeling the aftershocks of Sept. 11, but for me there have been certain people who have stepped up.
I don't even need to mention their names; I'm sure they know who they are. If it weren't for them, my holiday season really would be one to be forgotten. So for the Christmas season I will thank those who have given me the incredible gift of friendship.
For Dave. Even though I never say it, you are undeniably my savior. Without your friendship over the past eight years or so, there's no telling where I would be or who my influences would be.
As I've said before, writers aren't good at expressing themselves verbally, but on paper we can tell you the world. (The best of us can, anyway; I'm still learning the craft.) Anyway, thanks for everything, buddy. Oh yeah, and a personal aside: the association reigns supreme.
For Cindy. Although our friendship has had its hard knocks in this, its trial year, loyalty and reliability go a long way. You have been a rock, an inspiration, and the little sister I've always wanted. Thanks for going way beyond the role of a friend.
For Rhodian. It's been a tough year for both of us, but cooler heads prevail. Not only have you surprised me with your resiliency, but you've proven to be a valuable friend, a go-to guy. Your support has been much appreciated.
For Mia. Although we, too, are still in the early stages of what I hope will be a strong relationship, you have surprised me in so many ways. Your openness, your innocence and your laughter have helped me through those tough days. The mornings when yours is the first voice I hear and the nights when yours is the last I hear mean more than you know. Whenever I can't look into those eyes in person, I see them in my imagination. This Christmas will be special because you're a part of it.
For Joe. I have never felt such a strong bond in this business as I have with you. You have been rock-steady, not only as a co-worker but as a friend. I hold your friendship here above all. Thanks for going easy on me this year.
To the Herald and the Richners. This company has really come to feel like a family to me. You have shown me understanding, compassion and respect. Thanks for taking a chance on me.
For Oceanside and Island Park. Thank you to all who have invited me into your world. To name a few: Joseph Pontecorvo, Judy Fishkind, Jeff Toback, Bonnie Giebfried, and Donna Kraus. Thanks for making my first year so much easier.
Merry Christmas and a great New Year to all.
