The big dig in Rockville Centre continues

Not satisfied with snow removal process, village will continue cleaning up after the blizzard

A strong blizzard that began on Sunday morning –- the day after Christmas -- and continued through Monday afternoon, Dec. 27, left somewhere between 15 and 20 inches of snow in the village of Rockville Centre last week.

Snow plows from the Department of Public Works worked diligently last Tuesday and Wednesday to clear village streets of excess snow and make driving for villagers safer. The village asks that residents not park their cars in the streets or in municipal lots, so that plows can remove snow more easily.

Village Administrator Frank Quigley said that he was "not completely satisfied" with the cleanup process, but he characterized the situation as much improved compared to earlier last week. "We have to be patient and considerate," Quigley said.

The administrator said that the village has rented various snow equipment from different providers to accommodate for the record-breaking blizzard. Quigley also said that payloaders were used last Wednesday night to transport large mounds of snow out of the village's municipal parking lots.

The village has budgeted approximately $318,000 for snow storms in 2010-2011.
