After The Storm

The big dig out begins in Seaford, Wantagh

Posted

Wantagh and Seaford residents have spent much of Sunday digging out from the two plus feet of snow that fell in about a 24-hour span. Just two days earlier, forecasters were predicting 6 to 12 inches.

Max Newman, 13, of Seaford, got up early shovel out his own house, then went with his father and mother to the Wantagh Abbey Funeral Home, owned by his grandfather, to clear the driveway there. He said there was a lot of snow, but the snowblower was a big help.

Unfortunately, he said, after clearing the sidewalk, a plow came down the road again and pushed some snow back, so they had to clean it again.

Max said his plans for the rest of the day included doing homework and going sledding at Cedar Creek Park, a popular post-snow destination for residents in Wantagh, Seaford and surrounding towns. He added that he wished the snow was during the week, so it would have meant a school snow day. "I think everyone did," he said.

Jim Korotki, of Blue Spruce Lane in Wantagh, helped about a half-dozen neighbors clear their sidewalks this morning. "I just do it for them, it's no big deal," he said, adding that he doesn't like to watch neighbors struggle to shovel when he has a snowblower.

Korotki said this is the biggest snowstorm he has seen since he moved to the community five years ago, and far more snow than he was expecting. "I think this is the worst one we've had since I'm living here, without a doubt," he said.

Tyler Seger, 19, and Michael LaColla, 18, both of Wantagh, own a small landscaping business and help people dig out after storms. They had about 20 customers in the Wantagh area for this storm. They spent several hours working on Saturday night, and were out again for about seven hours on Sunday. With blizzard-like conditions on Saturday, Tyler said it was hard to get much done because the snow kept blowing back to areas they had just cleared.

Neighbors Tyler and Michael used snowblowers to clear sidewalks and driveways, and Tyler's younger brother, Thomas, 14, used a shovel to clear people's stoops.

"This was probably the worst storm we've ever experienced in our lives," Tyler said. "It was just so time consuming and the volume of snow was insane."

Tyler said that the plan for the rest of the day was to go home and relax.
