The choice is Hannon in 6th Senate District

Posted

The state is in a troubled situation. It faces a $16 billion deficit. What makes this particular deficit alarming are two stark realities, both involving the federal government: Stimulus money may no longer be an option, and the federal health care reform act must be implemented by the state.

During these uncertain times, the Herald believes that Republican incumbent Kemp Hannon is the best candidate to serve the 6th Senate District. Hannon, who entered the Senate in 1989, has seen his share of deficits, and his leadership and expertise in health care are pivotal, not only to implement new federal reforms, but also in the fight against the Medicaid fraud and abuse that costs the state billions of dollars. He spearheaded the establishment of the Senate’s Medicaid Task Force, an important initiative geared to recovering billions of dollars lost by a system plagued by fraud, misuse and errors.

Furthermore, during Hannon’s time in office, he has led the development of state programs that have improved access to health care for children, families and senior citizens and to provider information for patients.

We’re glad that Hannon is embracing the culture of reform. But he must follow through, especially if the Republicans retake control of the Senate. We agree with his comments that the budget process should be more transparent and ethics rules must be stronger. And even though he has been re-elected repeatedly in his district, he is open to an independent redistricting process.

Hannon’s challenger, Francesca Carlow, has mounted a spirited campaign despite not having much support from her own party. Her independent voice and stature as a successful businesswoman are inspirational, and it is refreshing to see people like her run for elected office. We encourage Carlow to stay involved in the public arena, take on important issues as a leader in the business community and run for elected office again.

A lot of factors will have to fall into place to restore the state’s fiscal health. We are confident that Hannon will help lay the groundwork for that recovery.
