The 100 degree weather at game time didn't stop the Elmont South team as they took the field in the region's most competitive tournament. The team is made up of Elmont young people who go to school at Gotham Avenue, Dutch Broadway, Alden Terrace and Elmont Memorial.
The players were chosen during competitive try-outs at Elmont Road Park and the Dutch Broadway Sump. Coaches for the team are T.J. Dangerfield and Scott Cushing who coached "Alfano's Avalanche" during the regular season and Coach Les Prosper who coached the Elmont Fire Department team. The Tournament Director for Elmont South is Mike Hanson and League President is Debbie LaRosa.
The players for the Tournament Team are: from "Alfano's Avalanche" Jordan Dangerfield, who plays shortstop and pitcher, Michael Ward, who plays third base and pitcher, catcher Diego Pimentel, centerfielder Jorel Phelps, 1st baseman and pitcher Brian Williams, 1st baseman, catcher and outfielder Elton Gilkes III, 2nd baseman A.D. Bennett, outfielder Marcos Pimentel, 2nd baseman and outfielder Damian Pimentel. From Prosper's "Elmont Fire Department Team" are outfielder and 2nd baseman Danny LaRosa, 1st baseman and outfielder David Hanson, E. H. Andrew Prosper and Cardinal outfielder Chris Berrios.
Dangerfield, Prosper and Cushing put together the team after a four day practice period where some 20 players from the league came out and gave it their best shot. "Each player brings something special to this team," said Dangerfield noting "many of these players can play multiple positions and play them well."
Part of the success of the team has been attributed to the deep pitching the team has with Gotham Avenue School's Brian Williams, Dutch Broadway School's Michael Ward and Jordan Dangerfield and Alden Terrace School's A.D. Bennett. Gotham Avenue's Diego Pimentel and Dutch Broadway's Elton Gilkes III have both played catcher with Pimentel starting most games.
"This is one of the best teams Elmont South has put on the field," said League President Debbie adding "they've made Elmont proud because they play hard and have a lot of heart."
The Carle Place contest was an important one for Elmont South as their record was 1-1 going into the game. In their first outing, Elmont South bested Elmont North 8-6 in 10 innings of play at Harris Field, where observers noted that both teams played exceptional ball in three hours of play. In that contest, Brian Williams and Jordan Dangerfield pitched for Elmont South. Elmont South's Andrew Prosper hit a two-run homerun at Harris Field which energized the team as they were trailing Elmont North. The second game against Garden City South was lost 3-2 where Michael Ward pitched for Elmont.
Carle Place tried to battle back several times but great fielding by picking off three attempted steals from great throws by catcher Diego Pimentel and tags by Jordan Dangerfield and AD Bennett stopped the Carle Place effort. A double play initiated by second baseman AD Bennett shut down Carle Place in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, a long hit to left field down the third base line was held to a single due to great throw and fielding by left fielder Danny LaRosa.
The first inning for Elmont South was a fruitful one for the 11 and 12 year olds as Jordan Dangerfield stole home for the first run and Brian Williams, Andrew Prosper, Jorel Phelps and Michael Ward scored on a sacrifice fly by Elton Gilkes III. Dangerfield, LaRosa and Ward had several hits which contributed to the Elmont south win as well.
"These kids played real hard under tough conditions. In the first two games they competed well, held their composure, fought back when they were behind to win the game," said Coach T.J. Dangerfield.
Elmont South will play Garden City next in the District 29 Tournament.
