The Fortnightly Club celebrates a century and a decade

The afternoon began as Mayor Mary Bossart presented the club with a proclamation establishing April 1, 2008 as Fortnightly Day in Rockville Centre. The next presentation was made by immediate past co-president Rosemary Donohue to Geri Solomon, Assistant Dean for Special Collections at Hofstra University.
Current Fortnightly co-president Lorraine Hoskin next presented Rockville Centre's Historical Society with a copy of the minutes. Frank Seipp, president of the society, was on hand to accept the donation.
The club's Literature and Education chair, Fran Svirida, then introduced the regular program of the meeting. Cynthia Brenner, of Canine Companions for Independence, discussed her group's work and, with her yellow Labrador Retriever, demonstrated how the organization trains dogs to help people with developmental or physical disabilities.
At the conclusion of the presentations and the regular program, meeting attendees enjoyed coffee and a cake in honor of the club's big birthday.
