³I look forward to working with the community, and just being an officer here in Malverne,² Lang said.
Lang, 32, graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1996, and worked as a marine engineer for 10 years before deciding to make a career change. The decision was partially inspired by his desire to be closer to his family, he said.
The eight-year Malverne resident, who lives with his wife, Lori, and children Jake, Ava and Luke, was encouraged to take the Nassau County police examination by many of his close friends.
Lang eventually began to seriously consider his friends¹ advice, and when the opportunity arose to take the exam, he
took it.
³I just decided to take the test, and a lot of my friends are police officers and they always had good things to say about the job,² Lang said. ³There¹s no one reason why I took the exam, it¹s just something that happened, and I¹m glad to be
an officer.²
Lang, who is originally from Floral Park, was sworn in at Village Hall by Mayor Patricia McDonald and Chief John Aresta on July 11, in a ceremony that he said was short, but also really nice.
³I love this village and wanted to raise my family here,² he said. ³What better way to keep up its charm and safe reputation than by patrolling the streets every day?²
Lang¹s swearing-in was part of a historic event for the village. He took the oath on the same night as Police Officer Joanne McNelis, the first female officer in Malverne history. Coincidentally, McNelis and Lang are neighbors.
