The legacy of Lynbrook's 'Dr. B'

Golf outing, scholarship dinner honor former school superintendent Santo Barbarino

Family members and friends of the late Dr. Santo Barbarino gathered with members of Lynbrook’s education community at the Lawrence Yacht and Country Club on July 27 to celebrate the life of the teacher, principal and superintendent who died in the summer of 2012.

The third annual Dr. Santo Barbarino Scholarship Fund golf outing and dinner raised money for scholarships that are presented to three graduating Lynbrook High School seniors and an Alpha Phi Delta college student each year. (Barbarino served as a district governor and president of the fraternity, as well as the director of the Alpha Phi Delta Foundation.)

“The warmth in the room showed why we continue to do this every year,” said Corey Guglielmo, one of the event coordinators. “The turnout was great, and everyone spoke so fondly of Dr. B.” The evening included dinner, entertainment, raffles and a silent auction. “The winner of the 50/50 raffle was generous enough to donate the money back to us,” Guglielmo added.

This year’s scholarships were presented to LHS graduates Brendan McDougal, student athlete; Brittney Gibson, student of the arts; and Luke Germanakos, student of academic promise. Samy Hegazy, who is studying at St. John’s University, received the Alpha Phi Delta award.

“The money that was given to me from the scholarship helped out a lot, because my mom doesn’t work and can’t help pay for college,” Gibson said. “So the fact that I got this scholarship took a huge burden off of me.”

The idea for the scholarship occurred to members of Barbarino’s family and the Lynbrook school community not long after his death. A nephew, Chris Barbarino, has worked closely with the Lynbrook Teachers Association to get the scholarship fund up and running.

Bill Germanakos spoke on behalf of his son, Luke, who was unable to attend the dinner, having just completed boot camp at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. Germanakos said that his son was “beaming with pride” after learning that he would receive the scholarship, especially because of the relationship he had with Barbarino, and how much he loved him.
