Sofield, a third generation Long Beach resident, graduated first in his class at the Nassau County Police Academy. As a new officer in the Long Beach Police Department, he was the recipient of numerous letters of commendation, and was promoted to detective in 1980, after serving less than two years as a uniformed officer. As Commanding Officer for the Detective Division, Sofield created the Specialized Detective Services, oversaw the Narcotics Task Force Unit and was an organizational member of the Detective Division's Burglary Unit.

Sofield has served on the advisory board of the Nassau County District Attorney's Multi-
Jurisdictional Drug Task Force, and has received recognition from many agencies including the Department of Justice, United States Drug Enforcement Agency, New York State Attorney General, New York City Detectives' Endowment Association, Nassau County District Attorney, Nassau County Homicide Squad, Nassau County Narcotics Bureau, and Nassau County Bias Crime Unit.
For the past 39 years, Sofield has been married to Karen Sofield, a past trustee and president of the Long Beach Board of Education. The father of six, Thomas
Jr., Gregory, Richard, Mary, Andrew, and William, Sofield is also the proud grandfather of 12.
Sofield is a decorated combat veteran, who served as Captain in the United States Air
Force as a pilot and aircraft commander, flying more than 200 missions over
Southeast Asia. He is a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the American
Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and served as a member of the St. Ignatius Parish Council and the Knights of Columbus.
