Edward J. O'Reilly, a well-known activist and resident of East Rockaway for over 40 years, died on Christmas Day. He was 68. Described as a citizen devoted to the community, Mr. O'Reilly frequented the microphone before the East Rockaway Village and Town of Hempstead board meetings, unafraid to speak his mind or voice his opinion. He promoted many community projects, including the Grist Mill Museum, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce.Several projects spearheaded by Mr. O'Reilly include the organization of local parades, the preservation of a 100-year-old village tree, a memorial for 139 Irish, English and Scottish immigrants, and the preservation of Baldwin's historic Nunley Park carousel.
Lynbrook dives into public pool plans
Lynbrook Mayor Eugene Scarpato announced the Village's plans to award a bid for the approximately $2 million construction project for a municipal pool to one of three companies by mid-February. In an initial survey, the pool project idea received approximately 90 percent approval by 525 of 600 resident responses.Mayor Scarpato said the pool will be 25 yards long by 50 feet wide, providing room for an estimated six lanes which could be used for competitive meets, high school practices, and other aquatic events. Plans also included a splash pool for small children, handicapped accessibility, and poolside lounge accommodations. The pool would not be funded by tax dollars, but rather by membership subscriptions.
