On Dec. 4, an Orbach Avenue home was burglarized. The burglar entered the home by breaking the front door window and then reaching in and unlocking the door. The only thing reported missing by the homeowner was a Sharp stereo.
"The robber walked right past cash that was lying on the kitchen counter," said Malverne Police Chief Glen Jacobsen.
The very next day, on Dec. 5, there was another break-in on Peterhoff Avenue, while the homeowner was in the shower. She reported hearing her dogs barking and, upon investigation, discovered a jewelry box was missing from the bedroom.
"There was no car in the driveway and the homeowner was in the shower," said Jacobsen. "Your typical burglar doesn't want to confront a homeowner."
The Maple Street burglary occurred in broad daylight, on Oct. 16, somewhere between 12:30 p.m. and 1:20 p.m., when entry was made through a rear window of the home. The basement and home office were ransacked and an IBM laptop and a 17-inch Sharp Plasma television were taken.
"The assumption has to be that it was done by someone who lives right in the neighborhood," he said.
There have been no additional reported burglaries since this last incident and the Malverne Police Department is relying on the public's assistance as they try to apprehend the burglars.
"Although the police have reacted to this by intensifying patrols in that area, we are really relying on the public's help," said Jacobsen. "If anything looks suspicious, residents are urged to notify us."
