Honoring her sister’s memory
Muriel Laskin will honor her sister by participating in The Lustgarten Foundation’s 12th annual Long Island Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk, set for Oct. 14 at Jones Beach.
The Lustgarten Foundation is the nation’s largest private foundation dedicated to funding pancreatic cancer research.
Laskin got involved after her healthy and active sister Barbara was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late 2009. She died in March 2010 after a four-month battle. Laskin wanted to get involved and support the foundation’s efforts to find a cure, so she joined the Long Island wad in the walk each year. For Muriel, it is also fulfilling to know that 100 percent of all money she raises goes directly to pancreatic cancer research.
The Lustgarten Foundation’s Long Island Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk at Jones Beach will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 14 with registration starting at 8 a.m. For more information about the walk and to register, visit www.curePC.org.
The lone cyclist
If you’re up and about in the early morning hours, perhaps you’ve seen a lone cyclist riding village streets. That cyclist, Thomas Nofi, has been training to ride in the Bike MS NYC event, a 30-mile cycling tour of Manhattan scheduled for Oct. 21.
Nofi has been training since May, and typically rides between five and eight miles per session. Riding the same route was boring, and riding on some of the busier roads can be hazardous, so in late July he decided to make a tour of every street in Rockville Centre part of his training regimen.
Riding three or four days a week, for five-to-eight miles, Nofi started his mission by riding entire neighborhoods in the southern section of the village, near his Park Avenue home. As he finished those areas and moved north, the transit mileage consumed two-to-five miles, so he found that instead of covering the 50 or so miles of roads in Rockville Centre, he was doing double and triple the required mileage. Because of this, his rides have increased to eight-to-10 miles.
