³We feel very happy that they help us out,² she said. ³I tell everyone about them and how god has blessed us.²
Figueroa and her family were among the 93 homes that were presented with the baskets on Dec. 17. According to Alan Hodish, member of Kiwanis and chair of the Community Service Committee, this is annual event that takes place three times a year. The families who receive the baskets are recognized as families in need by local priests, rabbis and social workers.
³Distributing the baskets gives us a good feeling and builds camaraderie,² he said. ³The people involved in the distribution enjoy doing this as much as those who receive the baskets.²
Every year, Kiwanis club members donate food and money for the event. Collections are done by students from local Key, and Builders Club.
The Kiwanis also collect non-perishable items donated by East Meadow residents. In addition, this year¹s financial and product contributions were made possible by the following businesses: Waldbaum¹s, Stop & Shop, Century 21, Meadow Drugs, North Fork Bank and SMJK Realty of East Meadow, and Stop & Shop of New Hyde Park.
