The goals of the foundation are to offer aid and comfort to impoverished children in Africa and all over the world. Now, in the spirit of Mungai, and in an effort to continue her legacy as a person who cared for children all of her brief life, Town Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby is heading to Kenya next week to offer her assistance.
In a statement issued by the Town of Hempstead, Goosby will be traveling with the CWMF in part to establish a coalition between Hempstead Township and Nairobi City. While in Nairobi, Goosby will be visiting Mayor Chancellor Dick M. Wathika and the city council to discuss setting up a "twin-city" status between the two municipalities.
"We will convey to the people of Nairobi City that they are not alone in their struggle, and that we will do all in our power to provide them aid and comfort," Goosby said in the statement. Goosby will be gone for three weeks.
Traveling with the lone Democratic council member on the Republican-dominated town board, will be professors from Adelphi University, where Mungai was a graduate student. Those embarking on the trip with Goosby will be volunteering at the Caroline Wambui Mungai Home/School, a facility that benefits local children who need basic nourishment, health and education in Africa.
"The well-being of children everywhere is our most pressing moral imperative. Caroline understood that well, and her wisdom and spirit endure in the foundation's efforts," Goosby said. "I am honored to be able to further her cause."
Mungai died in November of 2004 at the age of 25, after a brief battle with a deadly illness. She was a graduate student at Adelphi University and dedicated her short life to providing opportunities for children to learn and succeed. After her death, her family founded the CWMF on the mission to provide Health, Economic, Literate, Potential (H.E.L.P) to disadvantaged and vulnerable children. "I'm delighted to be able to see the results of this foundation's extraordinary resolve and compassion," said Goosby. "Their efforts are truly an example to which all of us should aspire.
