Zappolo, the town's deputy parks commissioner, apologized for not attending the civic group's last meeting where more than 100 people decried conditions at the park and demanded upgrades.
"We weren't aware of the impact of what was happening at Julian Lane Park," Zappolo said. "We're asking that you wait until September when there may be money for the playground. I'd appreciate it if you could give us a chance to make this right."
Since the last meeting, the town did make improvements, repainting the swing set and fixing its chains, replacing seats, removing graffiti, repairing the fences, and promising installation of a drinking fountain.
Residents, however, want additional playground equipment for older children. "Maybe we can add that equipment for the 5- to 12-year-olds in September, and by 2011, this park will be at the top of the budget list for improvement," Zappolo said.
Joe Baker, the SMCCA president, reminded Zappolo and Barbara Simms, the town's recreation director, that south Merrick has only one playground. "That's because when it was built, that's the way the community wanted it," Zappolo said. "But if the community changes its mind, we can change that."
Burglaries discussed
Detective Jeff Barnes spoke to residents about a rash of burglaries in south Merrick, including two recent ones.
"The guy is using a ladder and fences to get into the second floor and forces the windows open," said Barnes. "We're asking the community to get involved and call 911 no matter how odd you think your call is. That's how we'll catch the guy."
Barnes said the burglar strikes between 5 and 8 p.m., usually on a Friday or Saturday, and enters through the back of the house. The burglar has taken jewelry and televisions from victims.
"We think there are two of them working as a team," said Barnes. "And they don't care if you have a dog. They'll pet the dog and then put it in the bathroom. Protect yourself by leaving your lights on timers, and if you go away, get your mail picked up. And if an alarm gets tripped, call 911 first, not the precinct."
