Murray continued the town council's longstanding policy of not taking a stance on a project before it is approved. "We are not proponents or opponents," she said. "We are in the unique position of being a judge."
The privately funded Lighthouse project, led by real estate executive Scott Rechler and Wang, who owns the New York Islanders, calls for the redevelopment of 150 acres surrounding the Coliseum in Uniondale, near East Meadow. The proposal includes major renovations to the aging Coliseum, a new convention center, residential units, a five-star hotel and retail businesses.
Murray and her colleagues on the town council have been criticized for delaying an environmental review, a crucial state-mandated step toward the project's approval. Given such a large-scale project, Murray said, she revised the town's usual environmental review process to one she believes is more efficient and time-sensitive. Murray, who agreed to meet with Wang this Friday, said she anticipates the opening of the public hearing process sometime this summer.
