As drivers come to Carman Avenue and Salisbury Park Drive, it's hard to miss the bigger, brighter red lights shining above the intersection.
The new 12-inch lenses covering the red lights in each direction came after the East Meadow Civic Association's Traffic Safety Task Force conducted a study of Salisbury Park Drive. The study found that more than 500 reported accidents occurred along the road over 10 years, and two of those involved fatalities at the Carman Avenue intersection, said Richard Baggs, task force vice chairman.
"We have a particular problem with Salisbury Park Drive," Baggs said earlier when the preliminary report was released. "I got involved in the task force [after a 2000 fatality]. We're asking for a number of things. We don't know if we'll get them all, but we're hoping for a majority of them."
Recently, the Traffic Safety Task Force released its final report to the East Meadow community, the Town of Hempstead and Nassau County. With more than 500 incidents and seven known deaths, task force members issued16 recommendations to help improve Salisbury Park Drive and reduce the number of accidents there.
