Philip Mannino, 63, of Sixth Avenue, was driving his 1990 Proline vessel eastbound in the bay around 7 p.m. when it veered, throwing him into the water, Nassau County police said.
Alexander Webster, a 22-year-old Merrick resident, saw Mannino fall into the bay and jumped into the 52-degree water after him. Pulling him to shore, Webster tried to revive Mannino, police said.
Mannino was rushed to South Nassau Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8 p.m.
