The Long Beach Fire Department responded to an early-morning accident last Sunday after a motorist became trapped inside her overturned vehicle.
According to Fire Chief Richard Corbett, the female driver — an East Atlantic Beach resident in her mid-40s — was heading west in her Ford SUV at around 6:30 a.m. on June 19 along the 300 block of West Beech Street when her vehicle hit another car. The woman became trapped after the SUV overturned and landed on its driver’s side.
“She hit a parked car,” Corbett said, “which caused her to overturn.”
Corbett said the emergency call came in shortly after 6:30 a.m., and that firefighters arrived at the scene within three minutes. Roughly 15 firefighters were on hand to assist, Corbett said, and the Island Park Fire Department was on scene serving as backup. Two or three Long Beach Police Department vehicles also arrived at the scene, he saide.
“We used a Hurst tool. We cut the roof off the vehicle,” Corbett said of the rescue, noting that it took 12 minutes to remove the driver from the vehicle.
Corbett said that the driver — whom officials did not identify — was transported by a to South Nassau Communities Hospital.
“She was alert and conscious — she had an arm injury,” Corbett said, adding the driver had a laceration on her arm.
“It was a textbook operation,” Corbett said of the rescue. “Members of the [Fire] Department worked very well [during the rescue].”
