'Unsafe' building causes April 9 closure of North Village Avenue

On Wednesday, the unsafe condition was noted by the contractor, J-Tek, Inc. of 252 W. 37th Street, New York City. Workers from the company had begun work on 43 N. Village Ave. and had removed its rear wall and roof. The work appeared to compromise the structural integrity of the building and the Rockville Centre Building Department issued a stop work order. J-Tek received a summons for maintaining an unsafe condition.
The next morning, the village brought in an independent engineer from H2M who recommended removal of all construction down to the floor of the second story and the first story ceiling. His recommendations also called for the removal of a steel beam, which was done.
The renovation project is currently on hold. J-Tek must now submit revised construction drawings that must be reviewed before a new building permit is issued. And the cost of emergency activity will be charged to the applicant.
Village Administrator Frank Quigley said, "The village departments did a superb job managing a potentially dangerous condition. The Building, Police, Fire, Electric and Public Works departments, and the police aides, all played a role in ensuring the public safety while the situation was stabilized."
