Raquel Liberte, 20, of Valley Stream, was killed on Dec. 29 at approximately 1:30 a.m. when she lost control of her car and hit a tree off the right shoulder of the Meadowbrook Parkway, just north of the Southern State Parkway, state police said.

According to police, Liberte was travelling southbound at a high speed in her 2010 Nissan with Evelissa Ducatel, 20, also from Valley Stream, in the passenger seat.

Liberte was pronounced dead at the scene, and Ducatel was taken to Nassau University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Liberte was studying Secondary English Education at LaGuardia Community College.

"We were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Raquel Liberte," a representative from the college said. "Raquel’s goal was to become a teacher, and her promising future was cut short. Our entire community will suffer as a result of this loss. We extend our sincerest sympathies to the student’s family during this difficult time."

Liberte attended Memorial Junior High School until she withdrew in December 2009 after moving outside of the district, according to Gina Zaccari, the district clerk for the Central High School District.

Police said the accident investigation is ongoing.
