Valley Stream Central district on lockdown amid shooting threat

Posted

The Valley Stream Central High School district opened its doors to students and staff under a district-wide lockdown in response to a school shooting threat posted on social media, according to a statement by Superintendent Wayne Loper.

The shooting threat was made against Valley Stream North and South high schools by an individual who claims to be a former student of the district.

"The Nassau County Police Department and Homeland Security have been made aware of this matter and are working in conjunction with the school district to determine the source and credibility of this threat. There has been no additional information disclosed that would indicate that there is a current credible threat. The case remains open," said Loper in a statement. "Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the district and/or the Nassau County Police Department. Please know that the safety and security of our students and staff is always our first priority."

The district, out of an abundance of caution, has taken the following additional safety measures:

Lockout Procedure in effect.
All bags were checked and searched at arrival.
North and South High School students remain in the building for lunch periods.
Increased exterior security patrols.
Intensive patrol visits by NCPD patrol and specialty units.
All after-school activities have been canceled.

"Please note that our District takes all threats very seriously and our students, faculty and staffs safety are of upmost importance. We will keep you informed as this investigation continues," Loper added.

Valley Stream Districts 13 and 24 also remain on high alert and have notified parents of the threat online. "We have been notified by the NCPD that there will be an increased police presence in our community today in response to threats made towards the Valley Stream Central HS District. As more information becomes available, we will keep you updated," said Valley Stream 24 Superintendent Don Sturz in a statement.

The investigation is ongoing.
